The basic position of the Chinese Government regarding the settlement of the Taiwan question is "peaceful reunification; one country, two systems". To put it briefly, it is to realize the reunification of the country by peaceful means, and inside the reunified country, two different social systems -- socialism and capitalism - are allowed to co-exist. Socialist system will be practised in the main part of China and the capitalist system will be practised in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao areas. The two different social systems will co-exist peacefully for a long time without one swallowing up the other.
